In North Carolina, closings are usually handled by attorneys who specialize in real estate. In many other states, closings are handled by title or escrow companies; and in those states, the title search might be farmed out to lawyers or real estate paralegals. Historically, because real estate attorneys are involved, title insurance premiums are low in NC compared to other states. When you add up the attorneys fee and the title insurance premium for a closing in North Carolina, the total is comparable and in most cases lower than in other states.

In North Carolina, the real estate attorney usually does quite a bit of work, including these things: reviews the sales contract, performs a title search that covers a 40 year time period, checks for liens and past due taxes, prepares a title report so that a title company will issue a title binder, reviews and prepares certain documents including a loan package, prepares a Settlement Statement, coordinates and conducts the actual closing, updates the title, records the Deed and Mortgage, prepares a final title report for issuance of a title insurance policy, reviews the title insurance policy and sends the original recorded Deed and other documents back to the buyer.

Your real estate agent can give you the names of qualified closing attorneys in your area. Once you have a few names and recommendations, pick an attorney with these things in mind:

1. Hire a real estate lawyer based on his or her qualifications, experience and background – not based on the fee charged. If anything, a lower fee is an indication that your closing will be handled poorly or by a law firm that operates a real estate closing “factory”. Buying real estate is a huge investment for most of us. Don’t skimp on representation. The downside is too big of a risk.

2. Do not hire a lawyer to handle your real estate closing without speaking to him or her before you engage them to do the work. This is your opportunity to ask questions and raise any concerns that you have about the process. You might not speak to the lawyer again until closing, and that’s OK. If you have spoken to the lawyer prior to the actual closing, though, he or she will take a greater interest in you. It’s just human nature.

3. When you talk to the lawyer, ask any questions that you have about surveys, title insurance, scheduling, and what to expect in general. You are not required to attend the closing in person if you make the appropriate arrangements ahead of time. If you cannot be present for the closing, tell your lawyer during this conversation. Also, ask for the name of an assistant or other point of contact in the law office. Finally, get any instructions from the lawyer about bringing funds to your closing.

4. Forming a professional relationship with a good real estate lawyer will benefit you down the road. You will also need a real estate lawyer to handle any refinancing that you do on your property, as well the sale of the property at a later date. If you use the same attorney time after time, you will find that you get a better deal on legal fees. Plus, you will have someone to call if you ever get a speeding ticket!!

North Topsail Beach is located in the northernmost part of the island and is generally considered the residential part of the beach. Since there are only two restaurants in this community, most visitors either make their way south to Surf City or back to the mainland town of Sneads Ferry for shopping and entertainment. However, the North Topsail Beach portion of the Topsail Island is the best place for fishing, so keep your eyes peeled from a prime on shore spot or for a charter company that can take you into these choice waters for a prized catch.

In addition to the amazing fishing, North Topsail Beach is also home to New River Inlet and Stump Sound, where you will find an abundance of cracked and broken trees, clams, oysters, and shrimp. For those seeking serenity and adventure, this is the best place to head for a calming atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, and various marine life. The best way to navigate through this area is via kayak or canoe, which will also give you easy access to the many passages that will take you to the sound and out to the ocean.

Situated on the center of the island and extending into the mainland, Surf City is the business center and commercial hub of the island. Here you will find numerous restaurants and shopping outlets to satisfy your hunger and your quest for the perfect souvenir to remember your vacation by. One restaurant that is an absolute must for any visitor to the island is Indigo Marsh, which offers a wide selection of fresh seafood, prime cuts, and freshly baked bread and pastries. Sitting on the Intracoastal Waterway, this casual fine dining restaurant offers elegance and ambiance after a long day soaking in the sun at Surf City’s beautiful beaches.

Maintaining and protecting the environment are of highest concern for those in Topsail Beach. This family-oriented beach community strives to preserve the beauty of the area for future visitors by prohibiting high rise buildings and conserving one of the best qualities of the town. The Topsail Turtle Project locates and monitors young loggerhead turtles until they can make their way out to sea, while the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle cares for and rehabilitates injured sea turtles until they are healthy enough to return to the ocean. There are turtle walks where visitors can learn how to protect turtles, and one of the highlights of any trip to Topsail Island is a visit to the Turtle Hospital, as it is affectionately called.

One such place is Brown Mountain, near Morganton, where strange lights have been seen flitting through the trees. The Brown Mountain Lights have gained so much attention that they have been the subject of many scientific and paranormal investigations, and were even featured in an episode of X Files (called Field Trip) in 1999. While the cause of the lights is not known, they are a very real and much documented phenomenon.

Another interesting place to check out is Blowing Rock, located just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a Native American legend about Blowing Rock that adds to the unique charm of the place. Osseo, a chieftain, had a daughter named Starlight who was engaged to be married to Kwasind. However, a jealous suitor told Starlight that Kwasind was already married to a woman from a far-distant tribe. Starlight was devastated and broke her engagement, telling Kwasind that she would rather see him dead than marry him. Kwasind said “I will prove to you how much I love you.” and jumped off the cliff. Starlight was terrified that she would lose Kwasind and called out “O strong West Wind, bring my lover back to me! O sweet South Wind, bear him in your gentle arms!” The winds blew and raised her lover back up into her arms, where she quickly forgave him and agreed to become his wife. To this day the winds at the top of Blowing Rock are said to be so strong that they will catch anything thrown from the cliff and return it to its owner.

Another plantation worth seeing is the Mordecai Plantation near Raleigh. Now called the Mordecai Historic Park, the old main house is open to visitors. Additionally you can take a trolley tour that takes you around the city of Raleigh, stopping at many historical sites. Legend has it that Mary Willis Mordecai Turk haunts the Mordecai house, walking down the staircase and throwing down her portrait if someone should make rude comments about her appearance.

For more recent sources of mystery, consider checking out the Battleship North Carolina. Located across the river from Wilmington, the Battleship North Carolina offers a unique look into the lives of WWII navy crew. The museum focuses on the history of all of the vessels named “North Carolina” over the years including everything from the confederate ironclad ship to a nuclear attack submarine. Although only 10 people died on the Battleship North Carolina, it is apparently haunted by at least two ghosts who enjoy moving things around.

For most grown ups, childhood days are consistently linked up with the home where all the sweet memories are rooted. I know of a person who spent his early days in North Carolina and after years spent in different states, his homing instinct brought him back to the same state. “I must find a place here”, he said to himself, confident that here in North Carolina he would retrieve his peace of mind, long lost in roaming all over the United States. As luck would have it, his darling wife was also raised in North Carolina and he planned his progeny to become enduring residents of the state of his choice, too. He became intent on buying a home in North Carolina to spend the rest of his life there and started searching for North Carolina houses for sale.

Selection of site posed no problem at all since he knew his state in and out. “Foothills of North Carolina wouldn’t be pricey”, he argued with himself, but downtown Chapel Hill where he lived at first would cost quite a fortune. So he had a make a decision at this critical juncture. “Do I prefer to lead a secluded country life or go for a downtown dwelling? Which one will be more appropriate for me”, he asked himself.

But at the back of his mind he always thought of finding North Carolina houses for sale. Also, some other factors muddled his head. Since he had married late in life and had to raise his children, the place had to be safe from all angles. Finding out good schools nearby counted a lot, too. “What are the prospects in near future,” he inquired about the likely rise in value of property in North Carolina, over the phone. After all, every possible angle needs to be covered. You do not know what tomorrow may bring. “I must find a comfortable home whose value should appreciate over the coming years”, he assured himself. Having settled on all the factors, our man in sat content before his PC to do a search of North Carolina houses for sale.

Finally, North Carolina offers great weather and a climate that is family oriented to visitors.

The Cherokee Indians opened the first North Carolina casino in 1994. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino offers video gambling only, no table games. The video gambling options include poker, slots and blackjack, among others. The games offered are all skill based, even the slots. The slot games differ from non-skill based slots because there are two spins and the player chooses to keep or discard the results from the first spin. In the contract signed between the North Carolina state government and the Cherokee Indians that set up the casino it is guaranteed these video gambling machines have a minimum return of 83%. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino is open to gamblers over 21 years of age. The casino operates 24 hours a day. It is located at 777 Casino Drive in Cherokee, just 55 miles southwest of Asheville. There is an attached hotel with 252 rooms available. There are also five on-site restaurants. Harrah’s Cherokee Casino is family oriented with a childcare center and 1,500-seat entertainment area. Parking is free for casino guests.

North Carolina is the state where the Wright brothers took their first famous airplane flight. Though Orville and Wilbur Wright lived in Ohio, they decided to take their flight trials down south in the sandy hills of a small town called Kitty Hawk which is located on the chain of Barrier Islands known as the Outer Banks. Orville and Wilbur Wright owned a bicycle shop in the town of Dayton, Ohio when they got the brainwave to develop a flying machine. They worked on it despite many odds and made many designs before coming up with the famous “Wright Flyer” This was made of wood and metal with canvas stretching across the wings. The pilot had to lay flat on his stomach to steer the controls and fly the plane.

On December 17th, 1903 the Wright brothers made history when their Flyer took off into the air. Orville piloted the first ever flight after a quick coin toss. He climbed into the controls and took off at 10:35 in the morning. The plane soared into the North Carolina sky for a whole 12 seconds and covered a distance of 120 feet long. But that was the beginning of a new age giving a new meaning to speed. The brothers made three more flights after their maiden flight. Wilbur took credit for the longest flight, he flew for 59 minutes and covered 852 feet. The State of Carolina witnessed this historic feet on a cold December day. A monument was constructed on top of a hill called Devil Hill, North Carolina to honor this miraculous feet of engineering and the willpower of man.
